Why start with the bed.

ASCIA recommends covering mattresses, pillows and quilts with dust mite resistant covers.

6–9 months
for dust mite allergen in new mattresses to pass the 10 µg/g level (Visitsunthorn et al., 2010)
< 1 micron
every pore measured in our waterproof fabric, far smaller than the 10–40 micron particles that carry dust mite allergen
2.7 microns
most common pore size in our cotton; mean flow pore about 5.6 microns, under the 10-micron average that lab research found blocked allergen (Vaughan et al., 1999)

Questions parents ask.

Where do I start?

With the bed: the mattress first, then the pillow and quilt once your child uses them. ASCIA recommends covering all three with dust mite resistant covers. Your child's doctor or allergist can tell you what else matters for your child.

Will it help my child's eczema or allergy?

We can't promise that, and we'd be wary of anyone who does. Our protectors form a barrier against dust mite allergen in the bed. Whether reducing exposure helps your child is a question for your GP, paediatrician or allergist.

Is a mattress protector safe in a cot?

It fits over the cot mattress, under a snug fitted sheet, so it isn't loose bedding. Follow Red Nose Australia's safe sleeping guidance: baby on their back, feet at the foot of the cot, no loose items for infants under 12 months.

What size cot protector do I need?

Ours fits a standard Australian cot mattress, 130 × 69 cm and about 13 cm deep. Measure first, because cot sizes vary between brands.

How often do I wash it?

Wash before first use, then at least every two months (ASCIA's recommendation), with the fitted sheet on top washed regularly. Wash straight away after a spill. Warm or gentle cycle, no hotter than 60°C.

Safe sleep. Cot mattress protectors fit over the mattress, under a snug fitted sheet. Always follow Red Nose Australia's safe sleeping guidance. Pillows and quilts are for children who've moved into a bed.

Medical: Our products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent eczema, allergy or any medical condition. Always seek professional medical advice. Testing: Pore-size figures come from a third-party test report supplied by the manufacturer, available on request. They describe measured properties of the fabric only, not a guarantee of allergen reduction. Warranty: 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects on our dust mite protectors, in addition to your Australian Consumer Law rights. Hypoallergenic isn't a regulated term for textiles; we use it to mean 100% cotton with no plastic or synthetic layer.
