Waterproof dust mite cot mattress protector
Allergy specialists recommend dust mite covers.
It’s on ASCIA’s list of practical steps for reducing dust mite allergen at home — and it’s the one that keeps working while you sleep.
ASCIA recommends covering mattresses, pillows and quilts with dust mite resistant covers.
ASCIA allergen minimisation guidance — the peak allergy body for Australia and New Zealand.
Encasings produced a significant long-term reduction in dust mite allergen over 12 months.

Safe sleep: this protector fits over the cot mattress, under a snug fitted cot sheet — it isn’t loose bedding. Always follow Red Nose Australia’s safe sleeping advice.
ASCIA, the peak body of allergy specialists in Australia, recommends dust mite covers as part of minimising exposure. Neither ASCIA nor the researchers cited endorse a particular brand.
Built as a barrier
Waterproof. Breathable. Quiet.
A microporous TPU membrane sits behind a soft knitted jersey. It stops liquids and fine particles, lets water vapour through, and feels like fabric — not plastic.
0.16 µm
Our tightest barrier.
Every pore measured under 1 micron in third-party testing — the finest barrier we sell.
6
Sides enclosed.
Top, bottom and every edge of the cot mattress inside the barrier. A fitted cot sheet goes over the top.
Dry
Waterproof.
Nappy leaks, drool and spills stay on the surface and out of the cot mattress.
0
Raw seam edges. Sealed at the seams, not just the zip.
Seams are where cheaper covers leak. Ours are folded and bound closed, so the barrier carries right to the edges.
Quiet
No crinkle.
Soft knitted jersey on the outside, so it feels and sounds like fabric — and it breathes, unlike vinyl or PVC.
What the research shows
Even a new mattress builds up dust mite allergens over time.
A 2010 study tracked 60 brand-new mattresses of four different types for a year. All four built up dust mite allergen to levels the researchers classed as high within 6 to 9 months. A new mattress doesn’t stay clean for long — covering it is what keeps the build-up sealed away.
Visitsunthorn et al., 2010, Asian Pacific Journal of Allergy and Immunology. You wash the cot sheets.
Not the cot mattress.
Your little one spends more hours on the cot mattress than anywhere else, and it’s the one thing in the nursery you can’t put through the wash. One leak soaks straight in.
The easier answer: zip it on once.
Dust mite allergen stays sealed in. Spills stay out.
Why a standard waterproof protector isn’t enough
Standard waterproof cot protector vs dust mite cot mattress protector.
A standard waterproof protector is made for spills. A dust mite protector is made to be a barrier on every side — and the difference is in the details.
| Standard waterproof cot protector | This dust mite protector | |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Often terry or quilted, with a vinyl or PVC backing | Soft knitted jersey with a microporous TPU membrane |
| Coverage | Top only, or a fitted sheet style with an open underside | All six sides enclosed, zipped closed |
| Feel | Vinyl and PVC types can crinkle and feel hot | Quiet, and lets water vapour through |
| Pore size | Rarely tested or published | Third-party tested: most common 0.16 µm, every pore under 1 µm |
| Made for | Spills | Spills and a barrier against dust mite allergen build-up |
Tested, not guessed.
How small are the gaps in the membrane?
Most of the tiny gaps in the membrane are about 0.16 microns wide, and every gap measured is under 1 micron. A micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre — far too small to see.
In plain terms: the droppings that carry dust mite allergen are more than 60 times bigger than most of the gaps in this membrane. Even the biggest gap measured is 13 times too small for them.

Three steps. Then forget about it.
- 1Zip it on.Slide the cot mattress in, zip it closed and press the Velcro flap over the zip.
- 2Make the bed.The fitted cot sheet goes straight on top, snug with no loose fabric.
- 3Sleep.Wash it every couple of months, or straight away after a leak. That’s the whole routine.
Step one of a proven plan
Start with the bed. Then build on it.
A 2018 review by allergy researchers at the University of Virginia describes combining several measures as more likely to succeed than any single step (Wilson & Platts-Mills). Covers are a sensible place to start. Here is what the research says works alongside them.
Encase the cot mattress and hot-wash cot bedding.
A zipped cover on the cot mattress, with cot sheets washed hot. Research found water at 55°C or above was effective at reducing dust mite populations in bedding (McDonald & Tovey, 1992).
Shop dust mite covers ›Keep humidity below 50%.
Homes kept below 51% humidity for 17 months had 98% fewer live dust mites (Arlian et al., 2001).
Dehumidifiers ›Vacuum with a HEPA filter.
In a real-home study, intensive HEPA vacuuming cut dust mite allergen in carpets by about 81% (Yu et al., 2009).
HEPA vacuums ›Clean the air.
HEPA air cleaners are on leading researchers’ priority list for dust mite reduction (Wilson & Platts-Mills, 2018).

Waterproof dust mite cot mattress protector questions.
Do dust mite covers work?
The evidence is strong. ASCIA recommends covering mattresses, pillows and quilts with dust mite resistant covers, and a 12-month randomised controlled trial found mattress and pillow encasings produced a significant long-term reduction in dust mite allergen (Halken et al., 2003). They work best fully zipped, alongside weekly hot washing of sheets.
What’s the difference between a cot protector and a cot mattress encasement?
A standard cot protector covers the top of the mattress and is made for spills and wear. A cot mattress encasement encloses all six sides and zips closed, so dust mite allergen inside the mattress stays sealed in. This product is a waterproof dust mite cot mattress encasement.
Is it safe to use in a cot?
It fits snugly over the cot mattress, under the fitted cot sheet, so it isn’t loose bedding. Always follow Red Nose Australia’s safe sleeping advice: baby on their back, feet at the foot of the cot, and no loose items in the cot for babies under 12 months.
Will it make my baby hot?
It breathes far better than a vinyl or PVC sheet, because the microporous TPU membrane lets water vapour through. It is slightly warmer than our 100% cotton cot protector.
Does it feel or sound like plastic?
No. The membrane sits behind a soft knitted jersey, so the surface feels like fabric and doesn’t crinkle.
Is it good for nappy leaks, reflux and toilet training?
Yes. The TPU membrane stops liquid reaching the cot mattress, and the protector is machine washable, no hotter than 60°C.
Which materials are best for dust mite covers?
A fabric whose gaps are smaller than the 10–40 micron particles that carry dust mite allergen, made into a fully zipped cover. Our two options are tightly woven 100% cotton (most breathable) and this knitted jersey with a TPU membrane (waterproof, every pore under 1 micron).
How often should I wash it? Should I wash it before use?
Yes, wash it before first use. ASCIA recommends washing dust mite covers at least every two months; wash straight away after a spill or accident. The fitted cot sheet on top gets washed regularly. Warm or gentle cycle, no hotter than 60°C. Skip bleach, fabric softener, ironing and hot dryers, which damage the membrane.
How long does it last, and when should I replace it?
Typically 4–5 years. Body fluids and oils slowly break down the TPU membrane, so a fitted cot sheet on top and warm (not hot) washes help it last. Replace it sooner if the fabric tears or the zip no longer closes fully — a gap means the barrier is broken.

Not a medical product. We don’t claim this product cures, treats, prevents or relieves allergies, asthma or any medical condition. We describe the fabric’s measured physical properties as a barrier against fine particles and liquids. If you have a diagnosed condition, talk to your GP or allergist.
Barrier performance depends on correct fitting and the protector being fully zipped, with the Velcro flap closed.
Testing. Pore-size figures are from a third-party laboratory test report provided by our manufacturer; a copy is available on request. They describe the fabric, not a guarantee of allergen reduction.
