Why allergy specialists recommend dust mite covers ↓ View full details

100% cotton dust mite cot mattress protector

Allergy specialists recommend dust mite covers.

It’s on ASCIA’s list of practical steps for reducing dust mite allergen at home — and it’s the one that keeps working while you sleep.

ASCIA recommends covering mattresses, pillows and quilts with dust mite resistant covers.

ASCIA allergen minimisation guidance — the peak allergy body for Australia and New Zealand.

Encasings produced a significant long-term reduction in dust mite allergen over 12 months.

Built as a barrier

Natural cotton. Serious barrier.

This isn’t a standard cotton cover. It’s tightly woven 100% cotton — a weave dense enough to be pore-size tested in a lab — with a full zip and sealed seams. No plastic layer.

Tight

Woven, not just cotton.

Fine woven fabric is what leading researchers name for dust mite covers — in testing, nonwoven fabrics let mites through.

Sides enclosed.

Top, bottom and every edge of the cot mattress inside the barrier. A fitted cot sheet goes over the top.

0

Raw seam edges. Sealed at the seams, not just the zip.

Seams are where cheaper covers leak. Ours are folded and bound closed, so the tight weave carries right to the edges.

100%

Cotton — hypoallergenic.

Breathable, soft and quiet — you’ll keep it on the bed because you won’t notice it.

What the research shows

Even a new mattress builds up dust mite allergens over time.

A 2010 study tracked 60 brand-new mattresses of four different types for a year. All four built up dust mite allergen to levels the researchers classed as high within 6 to 9 months. A new mattress doesn’t stay clean for long — covering it is what keeps the build-up sealed away.

You wash the sheets.
Not the cot mattress.

Your little one spends more hours on the cot mattress than anywhere else, and it’s the one thing in the nursery you can’t put through the wash.

The easier answer: zip it on once.
It works every night — no extra effort from you.

Why a standard protector isn’t enough

Standard cot protector vs dust mite cot mattress protector.

A standard protector is made for spills and wear. A dust mite protector is made to be a barrier — and the difference is in the details.

Tests with live mites showed mites can get through nonwoven fabrics, while fine woven fabric forms an effective barrier (Wilson & Platts-Mills, 2018). Read: dust mite vs standard mattress protectors ›

Tight weave. Tested, not guessed.

How small are the gaps in the weave?

2.7 µm

Most of the tiny gaps between the threads are about 2.7 microns wide. A micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre — far too small to see.

2.7 µmMost gaps in this weave
10–40 µmDust mite droppings — they carry most of the allergen
about 70 µmA human hair, for comparison
200–300 µmA whole dust mite

In plain terms: the droppings that carry dust mite allergen are 4 to 15 times bigger than most of the gaps in this fabric.

Three steps. Then forget about it.

  1. 1Zip it on.Slide the cot mattress in and zip it closed.
  2. 2Make the bed.The fitted cot sheet goes straight on top, snug with no loose fabric.
  3. 3Sleep.Wash it every couple of months. That’s the whole routine.

Step one of a proven plan

Start with the bed. Then build on it.

A 2018 review by allergy researchers at the University of Virginia describes combining several measures as more likely to succeed than any single step (Wilson & Platts-Mills). Covers are a sensible place to start. Here is what the research says works alongside them.

Step 1 · You’re here

Encase the cot mattress and hot-wash cot bedding.

A zipped cover on the cot mattress, with cot sheets washed hot. Research found water at 55°C or above was effective at reducing dust mite populations in bedding (McDonald & Tovey, 1992).

Step 2

Keep humidity below 50%.

Homes kept below 51% humidity for 17 months had 98% fewer live dust mites (Arlian et al., 2001).

Dehumidifiers ›
Step 3

Vacuum with a HEPA filter.

In a real-home study, intensive HEPA vacuuming cut dust mite allergen in carpets by about 81% (Yu et al., 2009).

HEPA vacuums ›
Step 4

Clean the air.

HEPA air cleaners are on leading researchers’ priority list for dust mite reduction (Wilson & Platts-Mills, 2018).

Cotton dust mite cot mattress protector questions.

Do dust mite covers work?

The evidence is strong. ASCIA recommends covering mattresses, pillows and quilts with dust mite resistant covers, and a 12-month randomised controlled trial found mattress and pillow encasings produced a significant long-term reduction in dust mite allergen (Halken et al., 2003). They work best fully zipped, in a tightly woven fabric, alongside weekly hot washing of sheets.

What’s the difference between a cot protector and a cot mattress encasement?

A standard cot protector covers the top of the mattress and is made for spills and wear. A cot mattress encasement encloses all six sides in a barrier fabric and zips closed, so dust mite allergen inside the mattress stays sealed in. This product is a dust mite cot mattress encasement in tightly woven cotton.

Is it safe to use in a cot?

It fits snugly over the cot mattress, under the fitted cot sheet, so it isn’t loose bedding. Always follow Red Nose Australia’s safe sleeping advice: baby on their back, feet at the foot of the cot, and no loose items in the cot for babies under 12 months.

Which materials are best for dust mite covers?

Fine, tightly woven fabric. Leading researchers name fine woven fabric as the correct material for dust mite covers, after tests showed mites can get through nonwoven fabrics (Wilson & Platts-Mills, 2018). Our two options are tightly woven 100% cotton (breathable) and a knitted jersey with a TPU membrane (waterproof, every pore under 1 micron).

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

It’s hypoallergenic 100% cotton, with no plastic layer, so it feels and breathes like good bedding. Wash it before first use. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, check with your GP or dermatologist.

Does a zippered protector feel tight or noticeable?

It’s made to fit snugly so there are no loose folds, but under a fitted cot sheet the soft, quiet cotton isn’t noticeable — no crinkle and no plastic feel.

How often should I wash it? Should I wash it before use?

Yes, wash it before first use. ASCIA recommends washing dust mite covers at least every two months; wash straight away after a spill or accident. The fitted cot sheet on top gets washed regularly. Wash with the zip closed. Warm or gentle cycle, no hotter than 60°C, and skip bleach and fabric softener.

How long does it last, and when should I replace it?

Replace it when the fabric tears or wears thin, or the zip no longer closes fully — a gap means the barrier is broken. Washing on a warm or gentle cycle and avoiding bleach helps it last.

Cotton has pores up to 23 microns. Is that a problem?

Most of the cotton’s pores sit around 2.7 microns and its average is about 5.6 microns, under the 10-micron average that lab research linked to blocking dust mite allergen. If you want every pore under 1 micron, choose our waterproof protector.

Is it breathable?

It’s our most breathable option. Tightly woven cotton still breathes, so air and moisture vapour pass through.
