What this product is

A full encasement that seals your scatter cushion or throw pillow insert inside a tightly-woven cotton barrier — can be used in households where dust mite allergens are a concern, including from soft furnishings in the lounge room.

  • Why this matters for dust mite allergens. Sofa cushions and throw pillows are an often-overlooked dust mite allergen reservoir — they accumulate skin cells (the food source for mites) over years and rarely get washed. Dust mite allergens are carried by fecal pellets and body fragments that typically measure 10 to 40 microns. This cover's 2.8-micron weave traps these allergen-carrying particles inside the cushion.
  • Use alongside bedroom encasements. A cushion cover extends barrier coverage from the bedroom to the lounge — another allergen reservoir in the home. Many households fit cushion covers as part of a broader dust mite allergen reduction approach.
  • How it fits. Slip the cover over your existing cushion insert, zip it up, and put your decorative cushion cover on top. The barrier is invisible underneath your normal décor.

Who this is for

  • People who want to extend dust mite barrier coverage from the bedroom to the lounge
  • Households setting up an allergen-aware home and looking to cover sofa cushions, scatter cushions, and throw pillows
  • People who have already covered their bedding and want to extend coverage to soft furnishings
  • People who own quality decorative cushion covers they don't want to wash frequently — the inner protector takes the daily contact and washes easily

It's probably not the right fit if:

  • Your cushion is significantly larger or smaller than 50 × 50cm — measure first
  • You need waterproof protection (kids, pets, spills) — see our waterproof cushion cover instead

What the fabric does

Dust mite allergens are carried by fecal pellets and body fragments that typically measure 10 to 40 microns. This fabric tests at 2.8 microns at maximum distribution, well below that.

  • Tightly-woven cotton barrier. Particles inside your cushion stay inside, rather than passing through the fabric.
  • Enclosed binding seams. Fabric edges are sealed within a binding strip so the barrier extends from corner to corner without a gap.
  • Full-length zipper. A zipper running along one side seals the cushion inside.
  • Breathable. Woven cotton, not laminated plastic — no heat trap, no "crinkle" feel. The cover sits invisibly under your decorative cushion cover.

Test method: capillary flow porometry using Galwick fluid, conducted by an independent third-party lab.

Sizing

Cushion: 50 × 50cm (square) — fits standard scatter cushions, throw pillows, and decorative cushions sold across most Australian homewares retailers. The cover is sized slightly larger to accommodate normal cushion firmness and natural cotton wash shrinkage.

Care

  • Wash: Machine wash in warm or hot water. 60°C is the temperature most commonly cited for dust mite reduction in soft furnishings, where the care label allows.
  • Dry: Tumble dry on medium heat or air dry. Avoid high heat — repeated hot drying can shrink cotton.
  • Frequency: Every 3–6 months is generally sufficient when a decorative cushion cover sits over the top.
  • Avoid: Bleach, fabric softeners, dry cleaning, and ironing.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit my cushion?

Standard scatter cushions and throw pillows in Australia are typically 50 × 50cm or 45 × 45cm. This cover is sized for 50 × 50cm and is slightly larger to accommodate firm inserts and cotton wash shrinkage. Measure your cushion insert before ordering — if it's 45 × 45cm, this cover may be slightly loose but still works.

Will it shrink if washed?

If washed at very high temperatures or hot-dried, some shrinkage may occur. Cushion covers are sized larger to allow for reasonable shrinkage, but for best longevity we recommend warm wash and line dry, or tumble dry on medium heat.

Is this hypoallergenic?

The word "hypoallergenic" doesn't have a defined Australian standard, so we're cautious about applying it as a product claim. What we can tell you is what the fabric measurably does: it's tightly-woven 100% cotton with a pore size of 2.8 microns, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.

Does this go on top of my decorative cushion cover or underneath?

Underneath. Slip this cover directly over your bare cushion insert, zip it closed, then put your decorative cushion cover on top. The protector is the invisible inner layer.

Why use this rather than just washing the decorative cushion cover?

Decorative cushion covers don't form a barrier against fine particles — they're loosely woven and dust mite allergens pass through them. The dust mites and their waste live inside the cushion insert itself, which most people never wash. This cover seals the insert.

How often should I wash it?

Every 3–6 months is generally sufficient when a decorative cover sits over the top.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash my dust mite covers?

Dust mite covers for pillows and quilts should generally be washed every 2–4 weeks as part of your regular bedding routine.

Mattress encasements don’t need to be washed as often as regular mattress protectors because they fully seal the mattress and are not in direct contact with your body.

In most cases, washing a mattress encasement every 2–3 months is sufficient.

Washing helps remove allergen build-up on the surface of the protector and keeps the fabric fresh, while the tightly woven material continues to act as a physical barrier between you and dust mites inside the bedding.

Always follow the care instructions provided with your specific protector to maintain the integrity of the fabric barrier.

Is cotton or waterproof material more effective at creating allergen barrier?

Both cotton and waterproof dust mite protectors can be effective at creating an allergen barrier — the key difference is how tightly the fabric is constructed, not just the material itself.

Cotton protectors use a tightly woven fabric that allows air to pass through while helping block dust mite allergens. Waterproof protectors add an extra layer that creates an even tighter barrier, while also protecting against spills and moisture.

The best choice depends on your needs:

  • Cotton: breathable and comfortable for everyday allergy management
  • Waterproof: offers the highest level of containment and added moisture protection
