Waterproof Dust Mite Cushion Cover & Throw Pillow Protector | 50×50cm

A waterproof cushion cover and throw pillow protector for sofa cushions, scatter cushions, and decorative throw pillows — stretch-knit polyester jersey with a microporous TPU waterproof lining. The full-length zipper closure encloses the cushion insert on all sides, and the membrane's pore structure (approximately 0.16 microns at maximum distribution) means the fabric can be used as a barrier to dust mite particles in the 10–40 micron range as well as to liquids. Size: 50 × 50cm (square).

  • Surface: Soft and silent — no plastic crinkle
  • Closure: Full-length zipper along one side
  • Coverage: Encloses the cushion insert on all sides
  • Size: 50 × 50cm (square) — fits standard scatter cushions and throw pillows
  • Waterproof: Yes — the TPU membrane blocks liquids while remaining breathable
  • Care: Machine washable on warm/gentle cycle
  • Quality: Manufacturer-backed against defects

What this product is

A full cushion cover that can be used in homes where dust mite allergens are a concern. The TPU lining provides waterproof coverage for spills, food, and pet accidents on cushions on the couch, in the kids' play area, or anywhere food and drink come close; the membrane's pore structure and full enclosure mean the fabric can also be used as a barrier to dust mite particles.

  • How the fabric works as a particle barrier. Sofa cushions and throw pillows are an often-overlooked dust mite reservoir — they accumulate skin cells (the food source for mites) over years and rarely get washed. Dust mite allergens are carried by fecal pellets and body fragments that typically measure 10 to 40 microns. The TPU membrane's pores — approximately 0.16 microns at maximum distribution — restrict these particles from passing through the fabric.
  • Spill, food, and accident coverage. The TPU membrane is fully waterproof — useful for cushions in households with kids, pets, or anyone who eats and drinks on the sofa.
  • Used alongside other dust mite reduction measures. Encasement covers are one piece of dust mite reduction, alongside regular vacuuming, hard-floor surfaces where possible, and reduced soft furnishings. If you have a diagnosed condition, discuss bedding and soft furnishing choices with your GP or allergist.

Who this is for

  • People who want a waterproof layer on cushions and a fabric that can be used as a dust mite particle barrier
  • Households with kids or pets where couch cushions face spills, accidents, food, or drool
  • People who own quality decorative cushion covers they don't want to wash frequently — the inner protector takes the daily contact, spills, and sweat
  • Carers and aged-care households needing cushion protection that handles spills as well as a dust mite barrier

It's probably not the right fit if:

  • You prefer 100% natural fibres — see our cotton cushion cover instead (more breathable, but not waterproof)
  • Your cushion is significantly larger or smaller than 50 × 50cm — measure first

What the fabric does

Dust mite allergens are carried by fecal pellets and body fragments that typically measure 10 to 40 microns. This fabric's TPU membrane has pores measured at approximately 0.16 microns at maximum distribution (third-party capillary flow porometry, Galwick fluid), well below that, which is why the fabric can be used as a particle barrier in this size range.

  • Microporous TPU membrane. The membrane has pores small enough to block liquid water and fine particles, but large enough to let water vapour through. Particles stay inside the cushion.
  • Fully waterproof. The TPU membrane blocks liquid spills, food, drinks, drool, and accidents.
  • Full-length zipper. A zipper running along one side seals the cushion inside.
  • Stretch fit. The knitted jersey outer has elasticity, so it accommodates standard scatter cushions with a forgiving fit.
  • Soft and silent. The jersey outer feels like fabric, not plastic. No crinkle, no rustle. Sits invisibly under your decorative cushion cover.

Sizing

Cushion: 50 × 50cm (square) — fits standard scatter cushions, throw pillows, and decorative cushions sold across most Australian homewares retailers. The knitted jersey has stretch to accommodate slightly varied insert sizes.

Care

  • Wash: Machine wash on a warm or gentle cycle. Avoid hot water — high temperatures can damage the TPU membrane.
  • Dry: Tumble dry on low/medium heat or air dry. Avoid hot dryers.
  • Frequency: Every 3–6 months is generally sufficient when a decorative cushion cover sits over the top. If there's been a spill, wash sooner.
  • Avoid: Bleach, fabric softeners, dry cleaning, ironing, oils, and strong detergents.
  • Lifespan: Over 4–5 years, prolonged exposure to body oils can cause the TPU membrane to break down. A decorative cover on top significantly extends the lifespan.

Materials and testing

  • Fabric: 90gsm polyester knitted jersey outer with 0.2mm TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) waterproof lining.
  • Pore size: approximately 0.16 microns at maximum distribution (third-party capillary flow porometry, Galwick fluid).

We don't make claims that the product cures, treats, or prevents allergies, asthma, or any medical condition. What we describe is the fabric's measurable physical properties as a barrier against fine particles and liquids.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit my cushion?

Standard scatter cushions and throw pillows are typically 50 × 50cm or 45 × 45cm. This cover is sized for 50 × 50cm. The knitted jersey has stretch, so a 45cm insert will fit snugly inside this cover.

What's the difference between this and the cotton cushion cover?

Both can be used as a barrier against dust mite particles. The cotton version is 100% natural cotton, OEKO-TEX certified, more breathable, but not waterproof. This version is a polyester knitted jersey with a TPU waterproof lining — it blocks liquid spills as well as particles. Choose this one if waterproof matters; choose cotton if natural fibres matter more.

Does this go on top of my decorative cushion cover or underneath?

Underneath. Slip this cover directly over your bare cushion insert, zip it closed, then put your decorative cushion cover on top. The protector is the invisible inner waterproof layer.

Is it suitable for kids' play cushions or pet beds?

Yes — the TPU lining is fully waterproof against spills, drool, and accidents. The fabric outer feels like a regular cushion cover (no plastic crinkle).

How often should I wash it?

Every 3–6 months is generally sufficient when a decorative cover sits over the top. Wash sooner if there's been a spill.

Is it noisy?

No. Plastic-backed protectors crinkle when you sit on them; this has a fabric outer and is silent.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash my dust mite covers?

Dust mite covers for pillows and quilts should generally be washed every 2–4 weeks as part of your regular bedding routine.

Mattress encasements don’t need to be washed as often as regular mattress protectors because they fully seal the mattress and are not in direct contact with your body.

In most cases, washing a mattress encasement every 2–3 months is sufficient.

Washing helps remove allergen build-up on the surface of the protector and keeps the fabric fresh, while the tightly woven material continues to act as a physical barrier between you and dust mites inside the bedding.

Always follow the care instructions provided with your specific protector to maintain the integrity of the fabric barrier.

Is cotton or waterproof material more effective at creating allergen barrier?

Both cotton and waterproof dust mite protectors can be effective at creating an allergen barrier — the key difference is how tightly the fabric is constructed, not just the material itself.

Cotton protectors use a tightly woven fabric that allows air to pass through while helping block dust mite allergens. Waterproof protectors add an extra layer that creates an even tighter barrier, while also protecting against spills and moisture.

The best choice depends on your needs:

  • Cotton: breathable and comfortable for everyday allergy management
  • Waterproof: offers the highest level of containment and added moisture protection

Are the waterproof covers noisy?

The waterproof lining in this product is devoid of the crinkling or crackling noise common in other waterproof fabrics or PVC alternatives. Its use is prevalent in medical and biomedical industries.
