Dust mite allergens are carried by fecal pellets and body fragments that typically measure 10 to 40 microns. Pore-tested barrier fabrics used in dust mite protectors restrict these particles from passing through.

The cotton dust mite protectors at our store has pores measured at approximately 2.8 microns (third-party capillary flow porometry, Galwick fluid); the waterproof dust mite protectors TPU-laminated option has pores measured at approximately 0.16 microns. Both can be used as a barrier to dust mite particles in the 10–40 micron range. The TPU adds waterproof coverage for spills and bedwetting.

Do Allergy Mattress Covers Really Work?

Measure your mattress depth from the base to the top and choose a protector that matches it as closely as possible.

Cotton encasements come in 25cm and 35cm depths (cots are 13cm). Cotton has no stretch, so mattresses over 37cm aren't suitable. Between 35–37cm a mattress may compress 1–2cm and still fit without damaging the zipper.

Waterproof encasements come in 18–24cm and 24–33cm depths (cots are 13cm). The knitted jersey stretches a few cm beyond the listed range — see each product page for exact tolerance.

Encasement fabrics with pore sizes below 10 microns can be used as a barrier to other particulate matter in similar size ranges, including pollen (10–100μm) and the larger end of mould spore size ranges. Pet dander particles (~2.5μm) and the smallest mould spores fall below cotton's 2.8μm pore size — for those, the waterproof TPU-lined option at ~0.16μm is the tighter barrier. allergy mattress protectors help create a barrier and protect against other allergies.

1. Remove all bedding.
2. Vacuum the mattress.
3. Stand the mattress on its side if possible.
4. Unzip the protector and slide it on fully.
5. Zip closed and secure the zipper flap.
6. Add sheets and bedding.
