Waterproof dust mite mattress protector

Allergy specialists recommend dust mite covers.

It’s on ASCIA’s list of practical steps for reducing dust mite allergen at home — and it’s the one that keeps working while you sleep.

ASCIA recommends covering mattresses, pillows and quilts with dust mite resistant covers.

ASCIA allergen minimisation guidance — the peak allergy body for Australia and New Zealand.

Encasings produced a significant long-term reduction in dust mite allergen over 12 months.

Randomised, double-blind controlled trial. Halken et al., 2003, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

ASCIA, the peak body of allergy specialists in Australia, recommends dust mite covers as part of minimising exposure. Neither ASCIA nor the researchers cited endorse a particular brand.

Built as a barrier

Waterproof. Breathable. Quiet.

A microporous TPU membrane sits behind a soft knitted jersey. It stops liquids and fine particles, lets water vapour through, and feels like fabric — not plastic.

0.16 µm

Our tightest barrier.

Every pore measured under 1 micron in third-party testing — the finest barrier we sell.

6

Sides enclosed.

Top, bottom and every edge inside the barrier, closed with a U-shape zip and a Velcro lock flap. Not a fitted sheet with an open underside.

Dry

Waterproof.

Spills, sweat and accidents stay on the surface and out of your mattress.

0

Raw seam edges. Sealed at the seams, not just the zip.

Seams are where cheaper covers leak. Ours are folded and bound closed, so the barrier carries right to the edges.

Quiet

No crinkle.

Soft knitted jersey on the outside, so it feels and sounds like fabric — and it breathes, unlike vinyl or PVC.

What the research shows

Even a new mattress builds up dust mite allergens over time.

A 2010 study tracked 60 brand-new mattresses of four different types for a year. All four built up dust mite allergen to levels the researchers classed as high within 6 to 9 months. A new mattress doesn’t stay clean for long — covering it is what keeps the build-up sealed away.

Visitsunthorn et al., 2010, Asian Pacific Journal of Allergy and Immunology.

You wash the sheets.
Not the mattress.

You spend around a third of your life on your mattress, and it’s the one thing in the bedroom you can’t put through the wash. One spill or accident soaks straight in.

The easier answer: zip it on once.
Dust mite allergen stays sealed in. Spills stay out.

Why a standard waterproof protector isn’t enough

Standard waterproof protector vs dust mite mattress protector.

A standard waterproof protector is made for spills. A dust mite protector is made to be a barrier on every side — and the difference is in the details.

Tested, not guessed.

How small are the gaps in the membrane?

0.16 µm

Most of the tiny gaps in the membrane are about 0.16 microns wide, and every gap measured is under 1 micron. A micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre — far too small to see.

0.16 µmMost gaps in this membrane
10–40 µmDust mite droppings — they carry most of the allergen
about 70 µmA human hair, for comparison
200–300 µmA whole dust mite

In plain terms: the droppings that carry dust mite allergen are more than 60 times bigger than most of the gaps in this membrane. Even the biggest gap measured is 13 times too small for them.

How to fit a zippered dust mite mattress protector in four steps

Tonight

Three steps. Then forget about it.

  1. 1Zip it on.Stand the mattress up, slide the protector over, zip it closed and press the Velcro flap down over the zip. Easiest with two people.
  2. 2Make the bed.Sheets go straight on top. Add a Mattress Mate slip-on if you want an easy weekly wash layer.
  3. 3Sleep.Wash it every couple of months, or straight away after a spill. That’s the whole routine.

Step one of a proven plan

Start with the bed. Then build on it.

A 2018 review by allergy researchers at the University of Virginia describes combining several measures as more likely to succeed than any single step (Wilson & Platts-Mills). Covers are a sensible place to start. Here is what the research says works alongside them.

Step 1 · You’re here

Encase the bed and hot-wash weekly.

Covers on the mattress, pillows and quilt. Research found water at 55°C or above was effective at reducing dust mite populations in bedding (McDonald & Tovey, 1992).

Step 2

Keep humidity below 50%.

Homes kept below 51% humidity for 17 months had 98% fewer live dust mites (Arlian et al., 2001).

Dehumidifiers ›
Step 3

Vacuum with a HEPA filter.

In a real-home study, intensive HEPA vacuuming cut dust mite allergen in carpets by about 81% (Yu et al., 2009).

Waterproof dust mite mattress protector questions.

Do dust mite covers work?

The evidence is strong. ASCIA recommends covering mattresses, pillows and quilts with dust mite resistant covers, and a 12-month randomised controlled trial found mattress and pillow encasings produced a significant long-term reduction in dust mite allergen (Halken et al., 2003). They work best fully zipped, alongside weekly hot washing of sheets.

What’s the difference between a mattress protector and a mattress encasement?

A standard mattress protector covers the top and sides like a fitted sheet and is made for spills and wear. A mattress encasement encloses all six sides and zips closed, so dust mite allergen inside the mattress stays sealed in. This product is a waterproof dust mite mattress encasement.

Will a waterproof protector make me hot?

It breathes far better than vinyl or PVC, because the microporous TPU membrane lets water vapour through. It is slightly warmer than our 100% cotton protector, so if you sleep hot, cotton is the better choice.

Does it feel or sound like plastic?

No. The membrane sits behind a soft knitted jersey, so the surface feels like fabric and doesn’t crinkle.

Is it suitable for bed-wetting and incontinence?

Yes. The TPU membrane stops liquid reaching the mattress, and the protector is machine washable, no hotter than 60°C.

Which materials are best for dust mite covers?

A fabric whose gaps are smaller than the 10–40 micron particles that carry dust mite allergen, made into a fully zipped cover. Our two options are tightly woven 100% cotton (most breathable) and this knitted jersey with a TPU membrane (waterproof, every pore under 1 micron).

How often should I wash it? Should I wash it before use?

Yes, wash it before first use. With a Mattress Mate slip-on protector on top that’s washed weekly with your bed linen, wash the encasement every 6–12 months. Without one, ASCIA recommends washing dust mite covers at least every two months. Wash straight away after a spill. Warm or gentle cycle, no hotter than 60°C. Skip bleach, fabric softener, ironing and hot dryers, which damage the membrane.

How long does it last, and when should I replace it?

Typically 4–5 years. Body oils and essential oils slowly break down the TPU membrane, so a slip-on protector on top and warm (not hot) washes help it last. Replace it sooner if the fabric tears or the zip no longer closes fully — a gap means the barrier is broken.

I have a deep mattress — which depth do I need?

Measure from the top of the mattress to the bottom edge. Choose the depth that covers it: 16cm (Single only, for mattresses 10–20cm thick), 24cm (18–24cm thick) or 33cm (24–33cm thick). The knitted jersey stretches a little, but a close match gives the best seal. Deeper than 33cm? Our 100% cotton protector comes in 35cm and 42cm.

Can I use it on an ensemble base?

Yes. Remove the legs, slide the protector over the base and zip it closed. Make a small cut at each leg position, then screw the leg back in through the cut so it seals against the base.

Can it be used for bed bugs?

Zippered encasements are often used as one part of managing bed bugs, because the zip is covered by a Velcro flap. It isn’t a bed bug treatment on its own; for an infestation, contact a licensed pest controller.

Not a medical product. We don’t claim this product cures, treats, prevents or relieves allergies, asthma or any medical condition. We describe the fabric’s measured physical properties as a barrier against fine particles and liquids. If you have a diagnosed condition, talk to your GP or allergist.

Barrier performance depends on correct fitting and the protector being fully zipped, with the Velcro flap closed.
