The Ionmax Rhine Pro ION650 is a 50 L/day compressor dehumidifier with integrated H13 HEPA air purification, suited to large spaces up to 120 m² — open-plan living areas, large bedrooms, basements and small offices. WiFi app control, PM2.5 air-quality indicator, R290 refrigerant, and a 5 L tank with continuous-drain option.
Who it's for
Australian households needing serious moisture-removal capacity for large spaces — open-plan living, basements, large bedrooms, granny flats and small office areas. Best suited to warmer climates and heated rooms, where the compressor cycle is most efficient. For very cold unheated spaces (winter basements, unheated garages below ~10°C), a desiccant unit such as the Ionmax Vienne ION630 will keep working where compressor models slow down.

How it works
- Uses a refrigeration cycle to cool incoming air below its dew point
- Moisture condenses on cold coils and drips into the tank
- Dry air is then circulated back into the room through the HEPA filter
- Most efficient in warmer conditions; performance drops below ~15°C
- The HEPA filter sits in the airflow path, so the same fan drives both dehumidification and filtration — useful for combined moisture and particle control, but it means filter loading slightly reduces moisture-removal capacity (50 L/day drops to 40 L/day with HEPA fitted, per Ionmax's specifications)
- The integrated ioniser and UV lamp are supplementary functions — useful additions but not the unit's primary moisture-control or particle-capture mechanism
The research behind humidity control
The key research findings for indoor humidity and dust mite control:
- Arlian et al. (JACI, 1999) — keeping mean daily indoor RH below 50% restricted dust mite population growth by more than 97%, even when humidity briefly spiked above 50% for a few hours.
- Cabrera et al. (JACI, 2001) — homes maintaining indoor RH below 51% across a humid summer had mite allergen levels more than 10× lower than humid homes after 17 months.
- The Rhine Pro's high capacity is designed to hold a large room within that range during humid Australian summers.
Why a multi-faceted approach works better than any single tool
Reviews of dust mite intervention studies consistently find that single interventions deliver modest results, but combined approaches deliver meaningful reductions. The 2024 review The Prevention of House Dust Mite Allergies in Pediatric Asthma (Children, MDPI) concluded that most benefits come from combining several interventions rather than relying on one. A multi-faceted approach typically combines:
- Reducing humidity — what this dehumidifier does. Aim for 40–50% RH year-round.
- Tracking humidity — pair with an air quality monitor or hygrometer so you can confirm a large room is actually staying in range.
- Encasing bedding — dust mite covers for mattress, pillows and quilt are the single most-evidenced bedroom intervention.
- Filtering airborne allergens — the Rhine Pro's integrated HEPA filter covers this, but a dedicated HEPA air purifier is appropriate where you want filtration in a separate room.
- Neutralising allergens on textiles — an allergen-neutralising spray treats sofas, rugs and other soft surfaces that aren't easily encased.
- Removing settled allergens — regular vacuuming and washing bed linens in hot water.
A dehumidifier on its own helps, but the research is clear: it works best as part of a layered approach.

What it doesn't do
The Rhine Pro is a dehumidifier with HEPA filtration, not a medical device:
- HEPA capture percentage (99.95%) is the manufacturer's stated figure; test conditions are on the Ionmax datasheet
- Doesn't remove existing mould — reduces the conditions that favour new mould growth; if you have visible mould, treat the affected surface and identify the moisture source first
- Reduces airborne particles in a single room — doesn't sanitise air, kill viruses, or replace mechanical ventilation in a damp building
- Ioniser and UV lamp are supplementary functions — we don't make specific bacterial-reduction or virucidal claims for these in a residential setting; both can be switched off independently if you'd prefer not to use them
- Not a medical device. We don't make claims about treating asthma, allergies or any other health condition
FAQs
What room size is the Rhine Pro suited to? Up to 120 m² — large open-plan living areas, multiple connected rooms, basements, large bedrooms or small offices. For a single small room, a 10–12 L/day unit (Shinco SDZ-10L or Devanti 12L) is more cost-effective.
How much water will it actually remove per day in my home? The 50 L/day figure is rated at 30°C and 80% RH — very warm, very humid conditions. At more typical Australian indoor conditions (around 27°C, 60% RH) you'll see meaningfully less. With the HEPA filter fitted the rated maximum drops to 40 L/day. The rated figure is a maximum, not a daily average.
Compressor or desiccant for my situation? The Rhine Pro is a compressor — efficient in warm conditions, less so when ambient temperatures fall below ~15°C. For unheated cool spaces, the Ionmax Vienne ION630 desiccant works down to 1°C.
How loud is it? ≤49 dB. Quieter than typical room conversation, but louder than a small bedroom unit on low. Suitable for living areas and large bedrooms; some users find higher fan speeds noticeable overnight.
Can it run continuously? Yes — connect the supplied hose to the drain outlet for gravity drainage to a floor drain or sink. Otherwise the 5 L tank fills up and the unit shuts off; overflow protection prevents spills.
Does the HEPA filter need replacement? Yes — H13 HEPA filters are consumable and need periodic replacement; refer to the Ionmax datasheet for recommended interval based on usage. The dehumidifier's particle pre-filter is washable.
What about the R290 refrigerant? R290 (propane) is used in most modern compressor dehumidifiers because it has a much lower global-warming potential than older refrigerants. The amount sealed inside the unit is small and handled within the closed refrigeration circuit.
Care notes
- Empty the 5 L water tank as needed (or use continuous drainage)
- Wash the pre-filter monthly
- Replace the H13 HEPA filter per the Ionmax recommended interval
- Wipe the cabinet with a dry cloth
- Don't operate the unit immediately after moving it from cold storage — let it equalise to room temperature first
- Use on a level surface

Let customers speak for us
from 14 reviewsEfficient postage, easy to put onto the mattress, duvet etc. Daughter finds it comfortable and soft.
We purchased mattress , pillow and duvet encasement for kids due to their dust mite allergy.
Quality is great and delivery was earlier than expected.
Shipping was fast and efficient. The quality of the pillow is so much better than the one we bought from kmart. However it's not for us as it's on the thick side and will cause back pain used for a long period
Great product that was delivered quickly. I really like how the SmartAir HEPA filters need replacing every 22 months instead of every six months like most air purifiers. Great value for money.
Comfy as I want it
I love my quilt cover and pillowcases!
Lovely quality and they’ve made all the difference to my allergies and therefore my sleep!
We ordered this mattress for my son who has a dust mite allergy - it arrived quickly (and in a box, which made it super easy to move to the room we needed it in) and it was easy to unpackage and get on the bed. So far he is finding it very comfortable to sleep on.
So far I’m really loving this doona cover. Very comfortable,
Great duvet! It's soft and keeps the dust away so I don't sneeze. It's just right for sleeping all year. I'm really happy with it!
