The Ionmax ION632 is a 10L/day desiccant dehumidifier designed for Australian homes managing damp, mould and indoor allergens. CHOICE Recommended and approved under the National Asthma Council Australia's Sensitive Choice® programme.
Who it's for
Australian homes dealing with persistent damp and mould, particularly in cooler conditions where compressor (refrigerant) dehumidifiers lose efficiency. Suits bedrooms, bathrooms, laundries, basements and similar spaces where high humidity creates conditions favourable to mould growth and dust mite activity — both major triggers for indoor allergies.
Key features and specifications
- Type: Desiccant (zeolite/silica-based — works at low temperatures)
- Capacity: Up to 10L moisture removal per day at rated conditions
- Humidity targets: 40% RH, 50% RH, 60% RH, plus continuous Laundry mode
- Power levels: Auto, Low, High
- Integrated water tank with auto-shutoff when full
- Quiet operation suitable for bedrooms
- CHOICE Recommended
- Sensitive Choice® approved by the National Asthma Council Australia
- Warranty: 2 years; extended 2-year warranty available
4 humidity setpoints
- 60% RH — energy-saving, quiet operation
- 50% RH — within the indoor-air-quality range commonly recommended for reducing conditions favourable to mould growth
- 40% RH — drier setting, useful for reducing condensation
- Laundry (Continuous) — for drying clothes indoors during cooler months
3 power levels
- Auto — runs to maintain the setpoint
- Low — quieter daily-use mode
- High — for rapid moisture removal
How it works
A desiccant dehumidifier draws moist air through a rotating wheel coated in moisture-absorbing material. Captured moisture is condensed and collected in the tank. Unlike compressor dehumidifiers, the desiccant design works well at low ambient temperatures (under 15°C) — useful in cool Australian rooms in winter when damp problems are usually worst.
Indoor relative humidity above 60% creates conditions associated with mould growth and elevated dust mite activity. Indoor-air-quality guidance commonly recommends keeping RH between 40–55%. The ION632 lets you target 40%, 50% or 60% directly — each preset corresponds to different mould and dust mite control objectives.
The research behind humidity control
A landmark study by Arlian et al. (Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1999) found that maintaining a mean daily indoor relative humidity below 50% — even when humidity briefly rose above 50% for a few hours — restricted dust mite population growth by more than 97% compared with continuous high-humidity conditions. A follow-up study (Cabrera et al., JACI 2001) showed that homes maintaining indoor RH below 51% during humid summer months had mite allergen levels more than 10× lower than humid homes after 17 months.
Why a multi-faceted approach works better than any single tool
Reviews of dust mite intervention studies consistently find that single interventions deliver modest results, but combined approaches deliver meaningful reductions. A 2024 review The Prevention of House Dust Mite Allergies in Pediatric Asthma (Children, MDPI) concluded that most benefits come from combining several interventions rather than relying on one. A multi-faceted approach typically combines:
- Reducing humidity — what this dehumidifier does. Aim for 40–50% RH year-round.
- Tracking humidity — pair with an air quality monitor or hygrometer so you can confirm your room is actually staying in range.
- Encasing bedding — dust mite covers for mattress, pillows and quilt are the single most-evidenced bedroom intervention.
- Filtering airborne allergens — a HEPA air purifier captures the fine particles dehumidifiers don't address.
- Neutralising allergens on textiles — an allergen-neutralising spray treats sofas, rugs and other soft surfaces that aren't easily encased.
- Removing settled allergens — regular vacuuming and washing bed linens in hot water.
A dehumidifier on its own helps, but the research is clear: it works best as part of a layered approach.

What it doesn't do
This is a dehumidifier, not an air purifier — it removes moisture from the air, not airborne particles. It also doesn't remove existing mould — it reduces the conditions that favour new mould growth. If you have visible mould, treat the affected surface and identify the moisture source first; the dehumidifier helps prevent it returning. The ION632 isn't a medical device and we don't make claims about treating asthma, allergies or any other condition.
FAQs
What's the difference between a desiccant and a compressor dehumidifier? Compressor (refrigerant) dehumidifiers cool air to condense moisture; they're efficient at warmer temperatures but lose performance below about 15°C. Desiccant dehumidifiers use a moisture-absorbing wheel and stay effective at lower temperatures, which suits cooler Australian rooms in winter.
Why is 50% RH a recommended target? Above ~60% RH, conditions favour both mould growth and house-dust-mite reproduction. Building-science and indoor-air-quality guidance commonly recommends keeping indoor humidity between 40% and 55%. The ION632 has direct preset targets at 40%, 50% and 60%.
What room size is the ION632 suited to? Desiccant dehumidifier capacity depends on the size and condition of the room. The ION632's 10 L/day capacity suits bedrooms, bathrooms, and small-to-medium living areas. For very large or very damp spaces, a higher-capacity model may be needed.
How loud is it? The Auto and Low fan settings are designed for quiet bedroom operation. Specific noise figures (in dB) are listed on the manufacturer datasheet — please refer to that for the exact value.
Does it have a CHOICE recommendation and Sensitive Choice approval? Yes — the ION632 is CHOICE Recommended and approved under the National Asthma Council Australia's Sensitive Choice® programme.
Care notes
Empty the water tank as needed (or use continuous-drain if your unit supports it). Clean the air inlet filter monthly. Run on Laundry mode in well-ventilated spaces only.
Warranty: 2 years. Additional 2-year warranty available for purchase.

Let customers speak for us
from 14 reviewsEfficient postage, easy to put onto the mattress, duvet etc. Daughter finds it comfortable and soft.
We purchased mattress , pillow and duvet encasement for kids due to their dust mite allergy.
Quality is great and delivery was earlier than expected.
Shipping was fast and efficient. The quality of the pillow is so much better than the one we bought from kmart. However it's not for us as it's on the thick side and will cause back pain used for a long period
Great product that was delivered quickly. I really like how the SmartAir HEPA filters need replacing every 22 months instead of every six months like most air purifiers. Great value for money.
Comfy as I want it
I love my quilt cover and pillowcases!
Lovely quality and they’ve made all the difference to my allergies and therefore my sleep!
We ordered this mattress for my son who has a dust mite allergy - it arrived quickly (and in a box, which made it super easy to move to the room we needed it in) and it was easy to unpackage and get on the bed. So far he is finding it very comfortable to sleep on.
So far I’m really loving this doona cover. Very comfortable,
Great duvet! It's soft and keeps the dust away so I don't sneeze. It's just right for sleeping all year. I'm really happy with it!
