Handheld steam cleaner for dust mite and bed bug control — 132°C, no chemicals required

The Athena AT1 is a handheld steam cleaner that uses high-temperature steam (up to 140°C, operational at 132°C) to kill dust mites and bed bugs on contact. No chemicals or pesticides required. Independently tested in Australia, complies with all relevant Australian Standards, and carries Regulatory Compliance Markings (RCM) issued by Global-Mark.

Three buying options

  • Steam Cleaner & Accessories — $55 — the AT1 unit with 11 nozzles and accessories
  • Steam Mop Attachment only — $35 — add-on for converting the AT1 into a steam mop (requires the steam cleaner unit)
  • Steam Cleaner + Steam Mop bundle — $90 — both items together at no discount, just for convenience

How steam kills dust mites and bed bugs

Dust mites die at temperatures above 55-60°C; their eggs are killed at similar temperatures. Bed bugs and bed bug eggs die at temperatures above 50°C with sustained exposure. The Athena AT1 generates steam at 132°C operational temperature (up to 140°C peak) — well above the lethal threshold for both species.

Where chemical pesticides require multiple treatments and can fail against bed bugs that have developed resistance, steam works mechanically — the heat denatures the pests' proteins on contact. There's no chemical residue, no fumes, and no waiting period before the treated area can be used again.

Where to use it

  • Mattresses — steam external surfaces, seams, and tufting where dust mites colonise
  • Bed frames and bed bases — particularly the joins, screw holes, and seams where bed bugs hide
  • Pillows and quilts — steam external surfaces (use with mattress and pillow encasements for the most effective dust mite control regimen)
  • Upholstered furniture — sofas, armchairs, ottomans
  • Carpets and rugs — particularly under furniture and along skirting boards
  • Curtains, blinds, soft furnishings
  • Skirting boards and floor edges — common bed bug pathways
  • Cars — seats, carpets, and upholstery
  • Clothes — for delicate items unsuitable for hot wash

Note: many cheap steamers blow dust mites and bed bugs around rather than killing them — the steam is too dispersed or the flow rate is wrong. The AT1 is calibrated for the correct flow rate to actually penetrate fabric and deliver lethal contact heat.

Who buys it

  • Households doing routine dust mite control as part of a broader allergy-aware bedroom routine
  • Households dealing with bed bugs — particularly after travel, second-hand furniture purchases, or apartment-building outbreaks
  • Hotels, motels, and Airbnb hosts — between-guest sanitation without chemical residues that affect later guests
  • Aged care and disability support providers — chemical-free cleaning for sensitive residents
  • Cleaning businesses — handheld portability and 11-piece accessory set covers most domestic cleaning use cases

How to use it for dust mite control

  1. Fill the boiler with distilled or filtered water (tap water is fine but distilled extends the lifespan of the heating element)
  2. Allow heat-up per the manual — typically 3-5 minutes to reach operational pressure
  3. Direct the nozzle 2-5 cm from the surface; move slowly to ensure steam penetrates the fabric to lethal depth
  4. Steam mattress, pillow and quilt encasements on the external surfaces weekly when you do your bedding wash
  5. Vacuum afterwards using a HEPA-filtered vacuum to remove the dead mites and their debris

For best results in dust mite control: combine steam cleaning with weekly hot-wash bedding cycles (60°C+), tight-weave mattress and pillow encasements, regular HEPA vacuuming, and bedroom humidity below 50% RH.

What it doesn't do

This is a steam cleaner, not a medical device. We don't make claims about treating any health condition.

FAQs

Does steam really kill dust mites?
Yes. Dust mites die at temperatures above 55-60°C; the Athena AT1 generates steam at 132°C operational temperature, well above the lethal threshold. The mechanism is thermal — heat denatures the dust mites' proteins on contact. Steam also helps to break down the protein allergens (Der p 1, Der f 1) that cause the actual allergic response.

Does it kill bed bugs and their eggs?
Yes — both. Bed bugs die at sustained exposure above 50°C; bed bug eggs die at similar temperatures. The AT1's 132°C steam kills both adults and eggs on contact. Steam is particularly useful against bed bugs because some populations have developed resistance to chemical pesticides — heat is mechanical, so resistance isn't possible.

Do I need to use chemicals or detergents with it?
No — water is the only required input. The cleaning effect comes from the high temperature, not chemistry. You can add a small amount of plain white vinegar or a steam-cleaner-safe solution if you want extra deodorising, but it's not required.

How long does the boiler last per fill?
The 250 ml tank gives approximately 8-10 minutes of continuous steam at the standard flow rate. For larger jobs, plan for several refill cycles.

How is it different from a vacuum?
A vacuum removes dust, debris, and dead dust mites/allergens from a surface. A steam cleaner kills dust mites and bed bugs through heat. The two are complementary — steam first to kill, then HEPA-filtered vacuum to remove the residue. Many allergy-conscious households use both.

Is it safe around children and pets?
The steam is hot enough to cause burns; treat the unit with the same caution as a kettle or iron. Children and pets should not be in the same room during operation, and treated surfaces should cool for a few minutes before access. There's no chemical residue, so the area is safe for re-entry once cooled.

Why is the steam mop sold separately?
Many buyers want the handheld unit only — for cars, mattresses, upholstery, and bed frames where a mop attachment isn't useful. Selling the mop separately keeps the entry price lower for those buyers. If you also want to clean hard floors, the bundle is the same price as buying both items separately.

Care notes

Use distilled or filtered water to extend the heating element's life. Empty the tank after each use to prevent mineral buildup. Wait until the steam pressure has fully released before unscrewing. Store the unit with the tank empty.
