Everyone agrees on the dust mite protector. The question people get stuck on is the quilt underneath it — and the answer turns less on what it is filled with than on what you do with it.
The short answer: pick a quilt you can wash hot and fit in your machine, in a weight suited to your climate, and put a zippered mite-proof protector on it. Those three decisions do far more than the filling does. If you want a single recommendation, a washable synthetic or bamboo-blend quilt inside a zippered protector, washed on a routine, is the most practical combination for most Australian households.
If you have a dust mite allergy, you have probably already done the obvious things. The mattress protector is on. The pillows are covered. The sheets go through a hot wash every week. And then you get to the doona, and the clear guidance runs out.
What you find instead is a wall of contradictory advice. One source says avoid feather at all costs. Another says wool is the natural choice. A third says only microfibre is truly hypoallergenic, and a fourth insists bamboo is the answer. Every quilt on every shelf is labelled anti-allergy, hypoallergenic or dust mite resistant, and none of those words are defined or regulated. It is a genuinely confusing purchase to make when you are tired, itchy, and just want to sleep properly.
Here is the thing that makes it easier. Almost all of that advice is arguing about one variable — what the quilt is stuffed with — and that is the variable the research supports least. When scientists have actually measured dust mite allergen in real bedding, the differences between fill types have been small, inconsistent, and sometimes the opposite of what the marketing predicts.
What the evidence does support is a much shorter and more practical list, and it is mostly about what you do with the quilt rather than what is inside it. That is where we will start.
What actually decides it
Most quilt-buying advice starts with the filling. That is the wrong end of the problem. The measured differences between fill types are smaller and less consistent than the difference made by the three decisions below — and unlike the filling, all three are things you control after you buy.
Put the quilt inside a zippered protector
This is the highest-value decision in the whole question, and it makes the fill argument largely academic. A zippered quilt protector encases the doona completely, so mites and allergen cannot move freely between you and the fill. Crucially, the protector goes in the weekly wash while the quilt does not.
In a 12-month randomised controlled trial of 284 mite-sensitised children with asthma, those given mite-impermeable bed encasings had a 45% lower risk of attending hospital with an asthma exacerbation than those given placebo covers (hazard ratio 0.55, 95% CI 0.36–0.85).1 That trial covered the whole bed rather than the quilt alone — but it is the strongest clinical evidence in this field, and the doona is a large reservoir to leave uncovered.
Look for a full zip closure rather than a fitted or elasticated cover, and check the depth or size matches your quilt so it seals properly.

Choose a quilt you can genuinely wash hot
Temperature is what kills mites, not detergent. Laboratory testing found Dermatophagoides farinae was killed by 10 minutes at 50 °C, while D. pteronyssinus — the species that dominates in Australia — needed around 53 °C for 12 minutes.2 ASCIA recommends washing bedding weekly above 60 °C.3
So read the care label before you read the marketing. A machine-washable quilt that survives a hot cycle beats a more expensive one that has to go to a dry cleaner twice a year. Check three things before you buy:
- Maximum wash temperature — 60 °C is the target; 40 °C means you are relying entirely on the protector
- Whether it fits your drum — queen and king quilts often need a 8kg+ machine or a laundromat
- Whether it can be tumble dried — a quilt that stays damp is a worse problem than the one you started with
Match the weight to your climate
This one is indirect but real. Dust mites absorb water vapour from the air rather than drinking, and populations struggle below about 50% relative humidity. A quilt that is too warm for your climate means a sweatier bed, and a damper microclimate is a friendlier one for mites.
As a rough guide for Australian conditions:
- 200–350 GSM — summer, warm coastal climates, hot sleepers
- 400–500 GSM — all-season use across most of the country
- 600–800 GSM — genuinely cold winters or cold sleepers
Two lighter quilts you can layer often beat one heavy one — easier to wash, easier to dry, and more adaptable across seasons.
Caring for a synthetic or bamboo quilt
Most quilts sold for allergy-aware households in Australia are synthetic, bamboo or a blend of the two. They are the practical default precisely because they tolerate repeated hot washing — but only if you wash and dry them properly. Poor care is what turns a washable quilt into a lumpy, permanently damp one that gets replaced early.
How to wash it properly
- Wash it alone. A quilt needs room to move for water and detergent to circulate through the fill. Cramming it in with sheets means the middle never gets clean.
- Use the hottest temperature the label allows — 60 °C where permitted. Below about 50 °C you are removing allergen but not killing mites.2
- Use less detergent than you think. Detergent residue trapped in synthetic fill stiffens it and attracts soil. Half the normal dose is usually plenty.
- Skip fabric softener entirely. It coats fibres, kills loft and reduces breathability — which works against the humidity point above.
- Run an extra rinse. This is the step people skip and it matters more than the wash itself for synthetic fills.
Drying is where most people go wrong
A quilt that feels dry on the outside can hold moisture in the core for days, and a damp quilt is a better mite and mould habitat than a dirty dry one. Be thorough here.
- Tumble dry on low if the label allows. Low and long beats hot and fast — high heat can melt or fuse synthetic fibres and permanently flatten the loft.
- Add dryer balls or a couple of clean tennis balls. They break up clumps and restore loft as the fill dries.
- Stop and redistribute. Pull it out two or three times during the cycle, shake it, and pull the fill back into the corners.
- Give it longer than you think. Assume the core is still damp when the surface feels dry, and run another cycle.
- Finish in the air if you can. A few hours over a line in moving air is a good final step — though bringing it in before evening damp matters more than the sunshine does.
Between washes
- Air the bed each morning. Fold the quilt back rather than making the bed immediately, and let the moisture you lost overnight evaporate before it gets trapped.
- Shake and re-loft weekly when you change the sheets. Fill that stays compressed holds moisture.
- Wash the protector and quilt cover weekly at 60 °C — this is what lets the quilt itself go two to three months between washes.
- Vacuum the quilt surface with a HEPA-filtered vacuum if it goes a long time between washes. Note that the allergic person should not be the one vacuuming.
When to replace it
Synthetic fill does not last forever. Loft is the honest indicator: when a quilt no longer recovers its thickness after shaking, the fibres have permanently collapsed, it insulates less and it holds moisture more. Persistent lumps that will not redistribute, a musty smell that survives a wash, or visible staining through the shell are all signals it is done. Most synthetic quilts in regular use are past their best somewhere around the five-year mark; a well-protected one washed on a routine will go longer.

Anti-dust-mite treatments on synthetic fills: what the labels actually mean
Most synthetic and bamboo quilts now carry some kind of treatment claim — anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, mite resistant, Bio Fresh, HealthGuard, silver ion, tea tree infused. They appear on the swing tag as if they are all the same promise. They are not. There are three genuinely different categories here, and only one of them is actually aimed at dust mites.
1. Antibacterial and antimicrobial finishes
This covers most of what you will see: silver-ion treatments, quaternary ammonium finishes, and the branded antimicrobial systems that appear as "anti-bacterial" or "odour control" on a label.
These target bacteria and fungi, not mites. A dust mite is an arachnid — an eight-legged relative of spiders and ticks — and a finish that stops bacteria multiplying has no particular reason to kill or repel one. These treatments are generally developed, tested and registered against microbes, and an antibacterial claim is not a dust mite claim even though it reads like one on a quilt.
There is a plausible indirect argument: mites feed on skin scales that have been partly broken down by moulds, so suppressing mould growth might make a fill marginally less hospitable. That is a hypothesis, not a demonstrated reduction in Der p 1, and we have not seen it shown in a real bed over time.
2. Acaricidal treatments — the ones aimed at mites
These genuinely target mites. Benzyl benzoate is the long-standing reference compound and the benchmark other acaricides are measured against in laboratory work.13 Some quilt and pillow finishes sold in Australia sit in this category.
Two caveats matter more than the chemistry.
The effect fades. When carpet treatments were tested in real houses, they did reduce mite allergen — but the authors concluded that "the effects do not appear to be maintained for long periods, are not dramatic, and are different for different allergens," and that repeated application was needed to hold the reduction.11 A one-time factory finish is a much weaker version of that.
Chemical methods have not improved symptoms. The largest synthesis in this field — 54 trials and 3,002 patients — found chemical approaches to mite reduction did not produce measurable improvement in asthma outcomes.10 Reducing mites and improving how someone feels are different claims, and the second is the one that has not been demonstrated.
3. Essential-oil treatments — tea tree and eucalyptus
These have more behind them than most people expect. Laboratory work has found several plant-derived compounds to be more acaricidally potent than benzyl benzoate in contact and fumigant bioassays against both D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus.13,14
There is also a specifically Australian line of work here. Researchers at the University of Sydney developed a eucalyptus oil washing procedure for controlling dust mites and their allergens in clothing and bedding.12 ASCIA lists tea tree and eucalyptus laundry products among its partly effective measures — specifically as an option for cold-water washing when a hot wash is not available.3
Note the distinction though: that evidence is about an oil you add to the wash, where you control the dose and reapply it every time. It is not the same as an oil-infused finish applied once at the factory, and the two should not be treated as interchangeable.
The question almost nobody asks: how many washes does it survive?
This is the crux, and it is where treated fills tend to fall down. You are being told to wash this quilt at 60 °C on a routine — that is the whole point of buying a washable synthetic. Any treatment bonded to the fibre has to survive that, repeatedly, and manufacturers very rarely publish how many wash cycles the treatment is rated for.
If a treatment is a genuine selling point, the wash durability figure should be available. If it is not available, assume the treatment is a first-year feature rather than a lifetime one.
Does it name a specific active ingredient, or just say "treated"? A named active can be looked up; "anti-allergy technology" cannot.
Is the claim against dust mites, or against bacteria and odour? These are routinely conflated, and only the first is relevant to you.
How many wash cycles is it rated for? If nobody can tell you, treat the treatment as temporary.
Is the testing independent or in-house? Manufacturer testing is not worthless, but it is not the same thing.
Our honest position: a treatment is a reasonable bonus if the quilt is right on the things that matter anyway — washable, correct weight, fits your machine. It is not a reason to pay a large premium, and it is definitely not a substitute for a zippered protector and a hot wash. If you are choosing between a treated quilt you cannot wash hot and an untreated one you can, take the one you can wash.
Fill by fill: an honest comparison

What about feather and down?
Since this is the question most people arrive with, it deserves a straight answer rather than a repeated assumption.
When researchers have measured dust mite allergen in real bedding, feather has generally come out lower than synthetic, not higher. A New Zealand study sampling 65 duvets and 81 pillows found synthetic duvets contained roughly 15 times more Der p 1 than feather duvets, and synthetic pillows about 7 times more than feather pillows.4 The same direction of effect was reported for pillows in the BMJ5 and independently by a Manchester group.6 A French group, however, found no difference at all.7
The likely explanation is construction rather than material. Feather bedding needs tightly woven "down-proof" ticking to stop quills escaping — and a weave tight enough to hold down in also restricts mites and allergen. In effect, feather quilts ship with a barrier built in. There is also a plausible confounder: allergic families are the ones most likely to have already replaced their feather bedding, which would make synthetic look guilty without being the cause.
What to take from it: not that you should switch to feather, but that fill type is a weaker lever than it is usually presented as. If you already own a feather quilt and tolerate it fine, a zippered protector and a washing routine matter far more than replacing it.
When feather is genuinely the wrong choice
- True feather or bird allergy. Uncommon but real, and distinct from dust mite allergy.
- Feather duvet lung. A form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis triggered by avian antigens in bedding. A documented case describes a 43-year-old non-smoker with months of breathlessness and fatigue who improved after removing all feather bedding.8 Rare — but it is why persistent unexplained breathlessness deserves a doctor rather than a bedding decision.
- You cannot wash it properly. The practical dealbreaker for most households, and the reason synthetic and bamboo dominate this category.
What "hypoallergenic" does and doesn't mean
"Hypoallergenic" is not a regulated term in Australia. There is no agreed testing standard behind it and no body certifying it. On a quilt it generally means the fill is synthetic and therefore unlikely to trigger a feather or down allergy.
It does not mean the quilt resists dust mites. Treat the word as a description of what is not in the quilt, not a performance claim about what it will do. The same caution applies to treatment claims on quilt labels, which we cover in detail above.
The wool underlay warning
Wool quilts are a reasonable option with a washability caveat. Wool underlays are a different matter: ASCIA's allergen minimisation guidance specifically lists removing woollen underlays and sheepskins from beds among its effective house dust mite measures.3 They sit directly under the sleeper, trap warmth and moisture, and are rarely washed.
If you are auditing the bed, that is a higher-priority removal than changing the doona.
What we would actually do
- Zippered protectors on the mattress, pillows and quilt. The step with clinical trial evidence behind it, and the one that makes the fill debate largely academic.
- Wash all bedding and protectors weekly at 60 °C. Sheets, pillowcases, quilt cover, protectors.
- Wash the quilt itself every two to three months if the label allows — alone, low-heat tumble dry, dryer balls, and longer than you think.
- Get bedroom humidity under 50%. In subtropical Australia this is the hardest and most valuable lever.
- Remove wool underlays and sheepskins.
- Then think about the fill — a weight suited to your climate that you can wash hot and fit in your machine.

How do you wash a synthetic quilt properly?
Wash it alone so the fill can move, at the hottest temperature the label allows, with about half the usual detergent and no fabric softener. Add an extra rinse, then tumble dry on low with dryer balls, stopping to redistribute the fill two or three times.
How often should you wash a doona?

Can you put a dust mite protector on a doona?
Yes, and you should. A zippered quilt protector fully encases the doona and washes with the bedding, so the quilt itself needs washing far less often.

The quilt filling is the variable people spend the most time on and the one that changes the least. Put a zippered protector on whatever quilt you own, wash it hot on a routine, dry it properly, and get the bedroom humidity down. If you are buying new, pick for washability and weight — and let the fill be whatever suits your budget and how you sleep.
