What this product is
A full encasement that seals your existing doona inside a TPU-lined polyester barrier — designed for households where someone reacts to dust mites, with the added benefit of spill protection.
- The proteins that trigger dust mite allergy live in mite waste inside your doona's filling — particles around 10–40 microns. Every time you move under the bedding, those particles puff into the air you're breathing. The TPU membrane's ~2-micron pores trap them inside the doona.
-
What customers commonly notice. Less morning congestion, fewer overnight symptoms, better sleep — especially when used alongside mattress and pillow encasements. Results vary; barrier bedding works best as part of a broader allergy routine recommended by your GP.
-
The waterproof bonus. The TPU membrane blocks liquid spills, sweat, and incontinence — useful when the doona itself needs spill protection (rather than just the mattress underneath).
A note on Australian terminology: "quilt cover," "doona cover," and "duvet cover" all refer to the same thing — different words for the same product. We use "doona" and "quilt" interchangeably below.
Who this is for
This encasement is commonly chosen by:
-
Households needing both dust mite barrier and waterproof protection — incontinence, bedwetting, pet accidents, or spill protection on the doona itself
-
Adults and older children with diagnosed dust mite allergies who want a waterproof allergen barrier on their quilt
-
Households where someone has asthma, allergic rhinitis, or eczema and a GP or specialist has recommended barrier bedding as part of broader allergen management
-
Carers and aged-care households needing a doona layer that handles both allergen control and liquid protection
-
People salvaging an existing doona from a bed bug or pest situation — the sealed encasement isolates anything inside
It's probably not the right fit if:
- You prefer 100% natural fibres — see our cotton quilt encasement (more breathable, but not waterproof)
- You're looking for a decorative quilt cover — this is a barrier layer that goes under your normal quilt cover
- You need an infant cot size — we don't currently offer this product for cot use
What the fabric does
Dust mite allergens — the proteins in dust mite waste and body fragments — typically measure 10 to 40 microns. This fabric's TPU membrane has pores measured at approximately 2 microns, well below that.
-
Microporous TPU barrier. The membrane has pores small enough to block liquid water and fine particles, but large enough to let water vapour through. Particles inside your doona stay inside.
-
Fully waterproof. The TPU membrane blocks liquid spills, sweat, and incontinence — useful when the doona itself needs spill protection (rather than just the mattress underneath).
-
Zippered closure. A zip running along one short end of the encasement seals the doona inside once the corners are clamped in place.
-
Stretch fit. The knitted jersey outer has noticeable elasticity, so it accommodates standard doona sizes with a forgiving fit.
-
Soft and silent. The jersey outer feels like fabric, not plastic. No crinkle, no rustle when you move under it.
Test data for the TPU membrane is available on request.
Sizing
The knitted jersey has stretch to accommodate standard doona sizes. Order based on your doona's size.

Tip: Measure your existing doona before ordering. If you're between sizes, size up — a slightly loose encasement is easier to fit than a tight one.
How to fit it
- Open the zipper along the short end of the encasement.
- Lay your doona flat and slide it inside the encasement through the open end.
- Use the four internal quilt clamps to attach the corners of your doona to the corners of the encasement (this stops the doona bunching when you wash or move it).
- Close the zipper to seal the encasement.
- Put your normal quilt cover, sheet, or doona cover over the top.
Care
-
Before first use: wash the encasement before fitting. This is recommended by the manufacturer to remove any production residues.
-
Wash: machine wash on a warm or gentle cycle. Avoid hot water — high temperatures can damage the TPU membrane over time.
-
Dry: tumble dry on low/medium heat or air dry. Avoid hot dryers, which can break down the TPU lining.
-
Frequency: every 3–6 months is generally sufficient when a normal quilt cover or sheet sits on top to absorb daily wear. If there's been a spill or accident, wash sooner.
-
Avoid: bleach, fabric softeners, dry cleaning, ironing, and any oils or strong detergents.
-
Lifespan: over 4–5 years, prolonged exposure to body oils can cause the TPU membrane to break down. Using a normal quilt cover on top significantly extends the lifespan.
-
Quilt clamps: the clamps are consumable items not covered under the product warranty. Replacement clamps are available separately if needed.
Materials and testing
-
Fabric: 90gsm polyester knitted jersey outer with 0.2mm TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) waterproof lining.
-
Pore size: approximately 2 microns. Test data is available on request.
-
Chemical and pesticide-free: the fabric is described by the manufacturer as inert and free of chemical additives. The TPU does not off-gas after the recommended pre-wash.
-
Note: this product is not OEKO-TEX certified — OEKO-TEX is held by our cotton range. If OEKO-TEX certification is important to you, see our cotton quilt encasement.
We don't make claims that the product cures, treats, or prevents allergies, asthma, or any medical condition. What we describe is the fabric's measurable physical properties as a barrier against fine particles and liquids.
Pairs well with
For a complete bedding setup, customers commonly pair this with:
A complete allergy-aware bedroom uses all three layers — mattress, pillow, and quilt. For more on setting this up, see our guide to hypoallergenic-aware bedding.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between this and the cotton quilt encasement?
Both create a physical barrier against dust mite particles. The cotton version is 100% natural cotton, OEKO-TEX certified, more breathable, but not waterproof. This version is a polyester knitted jersey with a TPU waterproof lining — it blocks liquid spills as well as particles and has a stretchy fit, but isn't OEKO-TEX certified.
Is this hypoallergenic?
The manufacturer describes the surface as hypoallergenic, and the encasement is designed to limit dust mite particle exposure. Hypoallergenic isn't a regulated term in Australia, so it's a relative claim rather than a guarantee.
What pore size is needed to limit dust mite allergens?
Dust mite allergen particles typically measure 10–40 microns. Anything below about 10 microns will limit them. This product's TPU membrane has pores measured at approximately 2 microns — well below that threshold.
Does it really feel waterproof without feeling like plastic?
Yes. The TPU membrane is laminated behind a soft polyester knitted jersey, so the surface that touches you is fabric. There's no plastic crinkle and no rustle.
Will it make me hot at night?
Less than a fully laminated PVC protector, but slightly more than a 100% cotton encasement. The TPU membrane is microporous — it allows water vapour through, so it breathes — but it's not as breathable as natural fibre.
Is it suitable for incontinence or bedwetting?
Yes — the TPU lining is fully waterproof. The doona stays dry through the encasement layer.
Does it block bed bugs?
The 2-micron weave is too tight for bed bugs or their eggs to pass through, and the zippered closure has no gaps once closed.
How often should I wash it?
Every 3–6 months is generally sufficient when a normal quilt cover or sheet sits on top to absorb daily wear. If there's been a spill or accident, wash sooner.
What temperature should I wash it at?
Warm or gentle cycle, not hot. High temperatures can damage the TPU membrane over time.
Can I tumble dry it?
Yes, on low or medium heat. Avoid high heat — it can break down the TPU lining.
How long does the waterproof lining last?
The manufacturer indicates that prolonged exposure to body oils over 4–5 years can eventually cause the TPU membrane to break down.
What if I lose the quilt clamps?
The clamps are consumable items not covered under the product warranty. Replacement clamps are available separately on our store.
